10m Air Pistol

One-handed precision shooting at an Olympic level — where the only things between you and a ten are a steady arm, a calm mind, and the discipline to repeat the same process sixty times without variation.

10m air pistol is fired one-handed from a standing position at a target ten metres away. One hand, no support, open iron sights — and a 10-ring just 11.5 mm in diameter. Despite requiring only the shooting arm, it is one of the most technically demanding precision disciplines and arguably the most intense mental challenge in the sport.

Air pistol has been on the Olympic programme since Los Angeles 1984 (women) and Seoul 1988 (men). Mixed team events were introduced at Tokyo 2020, where one male and one female shoot as a pair.

Match format

The standard qualification course is 60 shots, typically shot in six series of ten shots each. The non-shooting hand must not touch the pistol, the body, or the shooting arm at any point. Top eight qualifiers advance to an elimination final, which at Olympic and international level is shot on decimal-scoring electronic targets — some clubs and ranges use these for everyday shooting too.

Key specifications:

  • Distance: 10 metres (precisely)
  • Position: Standing, one-handed — no support for the shooting arm
  • Calibre: 4.5 mm (.177) pellets
  • Sights: Open iron sights — no magnification, no laser
  • Power: Under 6 ft/lbs (no certificate needed in England and Wales)
  • 10-ring diameter: 11.5 mm — noticeably smaller than the air rifle target

Equipment

Clubs provide air pistols for beginners. When ready to buy, entry-level match pistols (Steyr, Feinwerkbau, Walther) start from around £200–£600. Competition-level pistols with anatomical grips and adjustable triggers run £1,200–£2,500.

Air pistol requires less ancillary equipment than rifle: no jacket, no sling, no mat. A decent pair of flat, stable shoes and some shooting glasses are the main additional items. Custom grips moulded to the hand can be ordered for precise fit.

No Firearms Certificate required. Air pistols under 6 ft/lbs (England and Wales) are unregulated. Must be 18 or over to purchase; under-18s may shoot under supervision.

Dry fire practice (training without pellets) is one of the most effective improvement tools in pistol shooting. Many top competitors do more dry fire than live fire — it is free, can be done at home, and builds the muscle memory needed for consistent trigger execution.

UK competition pathway

  1. Club level — internal competitions, shorter 20–30 shot courses while building stamina, club championships
  2. County and regional — NSRA county leagues, inter-county matches, open competitions hosted by clubs across the UK
  3. National — NSRA British Championships, British Shooting national selection events, national postal league finals
  4. International — ISSF World Cups, European Championships, Commonwealth Games, Olympic qualification; full lottery funding and sports science available at elite level

Skills and training

Air pistol places extreme demands on hand and arm steadiness, grip consistency, shoulder stability, and the ability to isolate trigger finger movement from the rest of the hand. The mental load across a 60-shot match — maintaining concentration, managing hold variance, and resetting after each shot — is one of the highest in any shooting discipline.

Common challenges and how to address them:

  • Arm fatigue: Build strength gradually; take rest breaks; ensure your stance efficiently distributes load
  • Inconsistent groups: Focus on grip consistency and a repeatable pre-shot routine; keep a shooting diary
  • Trigger jerk: Isolate trigger finger through extensive dry fire; practise smooth, steady pressure increase
  • Mental pressure: Enter club competitions regularly; develop a mental reset routine between shots
