Practical Shooting
Dynamic action shooting with movement, multiple targets, timed stages, and tactical decision-making — from Gallery Rifle at short range to UKPSA practical shotgun, the UK has a thriving practical shooting community.
Practical shooting disciplines combine speed, accuracy, and tactical thinking. Unlike static target shooting, practical events involve movement between shooting positions, multiple targets, barricades, and timed stages — making split-second decisions about shot order and movement while staying safe and accurate.
The UK’s practical shooting scene is adapted for domestic firearms law, which means practical shotgun is the dominant action discipline (the handgun ban having removed the traditional IPSC pistol divisions). Action air — using air pistols — provides an accessible entry point requiring no Firearms Certificate.
Gallery Rifle (NRA UK)
Gallery Rifle is the UK’s traditional practical rifle discipline, governed by NRA UK. Shot at 15–25 metres with .22LR rifles or long-barrelled pistols, it combines precision accuracy with speed shooting in a compact indoor or short outdoor format.
Main formats:
- Timed and Precision 1 (T&P1): Mixed timed and precision stages, 30 rounds total
- Multi-Target: Engaging multiple targets in sequence; tests transition speed
- Falling Plates: Knock down steel plates as quickly as possible
Gallery Rifle is accessible — standard .22LR target rifles work well and the format is less equipment-intensive than full IPSC. Section 1 Firearms Certificate required for .22LR.
UKPSA (practical shotgun and mini rifle)
The United Kingdom Practical Shooting Association (UKPSA) governs IPSC-style practical shooting adapted for UK law. Courses of fire feature movement, cover, and multiple paper and steel targets.
Practical Shotgun is the main UKPSA discipline. Dynamic courses with pump-action or semi-auto 12-gauge shotguns. Three divisions: Standard (iron sights), Modified (optics), Open (advanced modifications). Shotgun Certificate required.
Mini Rifle (.22LR) adapts practical shooting to .22 carbines — movement, barricades, multiple targets, less recoil than centrefire. Section 1 Firearms Certificate required.
Note: traditional IPSC handgun divisions are heavily restricted in the UK due to the handgun ban. Long-barrelled pistols are used where applicable, but practical shotgun is the principal UKPSA discipline.
Action Air
Action Air brings practical shooting excitement to air pistols and rifles. No Firearms Certificate needed for sub-6 ft/lbs pistols. Indoor-compatible and accessible from day one.
Courses of fire use multiple paper and steel targets with movement between positions. Scoring combines accuracy (hits) with speed (total time). Equipment: CO2 or PCP air pistol (£100–£500), competition holster (£20–£80), multiple magazines.
Action Air is available at Pinhoe TSC. See the Action Air discipline page for details.
Scoring systems
Comstock (hit factor): Points scored divided by time elapsed. Encourages finding the personal balance between speed and accuracy. Used in most IPSC/UKPSA events.
Virginia Count: Fixed number of rounds, fixed par time. Penalties for misses or finishing overtime. Tests ability to perform under time pressure.
Organisations
UKPSA (ukpsa.co.uk) governs IPSC-style practical shooting in the UK including practical shotgun. Affiliated with IPSC internationally.
NRA UK (nra.org.uk) governs Gallery Rifle and other practical rifle disciplines. The Phoenix Meeting at Bisley is a major annual event.
At Pinhoe TSC
Pinhoe TSC offers Action Air — bringing practical shooting concepts to air pistol with no Firearms Certificate needed.
We do not offer practical shotgun, IPSC rifle, or full Gallery Rifle courses due to range configuration. For those disciplines, use the UKPSA or NRA UK club finders to locate specialist clubs.
If you are interested in traditional target shooting at Pinhoe, we offer: 10m Air Pistol, 10m Air Rifle, .22LR Prone Rifle, and Action Air.
Our Give it a Go programme provides three sessions for £50 — no equipment or experience needed.
